Lummi Island had been our home for nearly 30 years, and while our reasons for living here have been varied, they all come down to lifestyle. The facts of the Island are straightforward. It lies less than a mile off the coast of Whatcom County, which is just a 10 minute Ferry Ride via the Whatcom Chief. It supports a permanent population of approximately 900 people, a store, several restaurants, several bed and breakfasts and an active artists' colony. There are a few public facilities but there are a number of homes available for vacation rentals.
Lummi Island is a community, and the sense of entering a different dimension is very clear from the time one leaves the ferry on the Island side. While the population has grown substantial in our years on Lummi Island, the friendliness of the Islanders is still one of its major characteristics. The store ( The Islander) and the Post Office are major hubs of connection points for the population of both full time and part-time residents.
